  • Non-destructive Testing for Protective Coatings: Implementing a Lifetime Corrosion Prevention Program
During the 20th century cheap and abundant energy made corrosion a manageable problem. This era is coming to an end. Soon, industry will find there is less funding available for corrosion prevention after adjusting for rising energy costs. At this time, management will be forced to decide whether to continue with traditional corrosion control practices or change to something new with a greater potential for energy savings. For many, this will be an extremely difficult decision to make.
  • National VOC Emission Standards for Aerosol Coatings
In June of 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established national reactivity-based emission standards for 170 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in aerosol coating products. This aerosol coatings reactivity rule aims to encourage reformulation of aerosol coatings to reduce ground-level ozone formation. The rule specifies reactivity limits for 36 aerosol product categories. The 170 VOCs are ranked by their reactivity factor (RF, units in grams of ozone per gram of VOC). VOCs with a high RF are more likely to form ozone, an air pollutant, than VOCs with a lower RF.
  • Evaluating Over-aged Powder Coatings
Powder coatings need to be stored under controlled environmental conditions to avoid deterioration or “thermal aging.” In particular, temperatures exceeding typical manufacturer-recommended storage conditions of 25°C (77°F) must be avoided, as significantly exceeding these temperatures for just a few days can lead to permanent damage of the product.

NACE International and The Powder Coating Institute, PCI, Form New Industrial Coatings Show

26 August 2009

The Powder Coating Institute, or PCI, and NACE International, The Corrosion Society, or NACE, will be partnering to produce The North American Industrial Coating Show to be held at the Indianapolis Convention Center, Oct. 27-29, 2010.

The North American Industrial Coating Show will replace PCI’s The Coating Show and NACE’s CoatingsPro show. “This will be the premier coatings show in North America, and we are excited about partnering with NACE and other associations as we continue to expand this show to encompass all facets of the industrial coatings industry” said Steve Houston, PCI’s executive director.

NACE principals agreed. “Partnering with PCI is a great step toward developing a world-renown coating show,” said Tony Keane, executive director of NACE International. “Bringing together CoatingsPro and The Coating Show will provide the industry with a unique opportunity to find solutions to their coatings challenges and to provide greater protection to their vital assets.”

The North American Industrial Coating Show will provide the industry with a new, compelling event to meet, learn and network, the partners said. Targeted attendees include contractors, end users of paint and powder coatings, supervisory personnel, specifiers, formulators, and paint and equipment manufacturers. Educational courses will be offered in conjunction with the event and many will provide internationally recognized certifications.

For more information about exhibiting, attending or being involved in this event, please contact NACE or PCI online.
