Professional Plating could dazzle you dizzy with its deep range of finishing services—rack zinc plating, barrel zinc plating, acrylic e-coating, epoxy e-coating, custom powder coating, and specialty ceramic coatings, to name a few. But it’s not just about diversity for diversity’s sake. The real hook, company principals note, is doing all of these things on a level of quality that’s repeatable and consistent—every time.

An investigation was performed to determine the cause of coating failures on several large hinged steel boxes. These boxes were constructed of sheet steel and were allegedly coated with corrosion-resistant coatings. However, after exposure outdoors, much of the paint delaminated and severe corrosion occurred.
  • National VOC Emission Standards for Aerosol Coatings
In June of 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established national reactivity-based emission standards for 170 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in aerosol coating products. This aerosol coatings reactivity rule aims to encourage reformulation of aerosol coatings to reduce ground-level ozone formation. The rule specifies reactivity limits for 36 aerosol product categories. The 170 VOCs are ranked by their reactivity factor (RF, units in grams of ozone per gram of VOC). VOCs with a high RF are more likely to form ozone, an air pollutant, than VOCs with a lower RF.

H.E. Orr Company Combines E-Coating, Powder Coating Operations

05 May 2010

Latest H.E. Orr strategy designed to improve efficiencies and customer service while reducing costs.

Paulding, Ohio,-based H.E. Orr Company provides OEM E-coating and powder coating customers with significant cost savings and superior corrosion protection by combining two processes on one automated line. According to Greg Johnson, president, this combined coating approach is unique to the coating industry as most firms provide these two disciplines on separate production lines or with costly ship-through agreements to separate facilities.

“We determined that there was a strong demand for combining both coating processes on the same line,” John on said. “Few companies across the country are set up in this manner. This investment in our production facility saves our OEM customers time and money.”

According to Johnson, e-coating and powder coating on one line offers significant benefits. Among them: time and cost savings as a result of not having to move parts to separate facilities; lower re-racking time and labor costs; simplification of parts specification changes by dealing with one supplier; improved durability of the coating for very little cost by adding e-coating to parts that are currently only powder coated; and improved quality control, accounting efficiencies and communications by using only one supplier.

To assure quality standards are met, H.E. Orr utilizes a zinc phosphate, eight-stage pre-treatment that establishes an outstanding bonding surface prior to coating. H. E. Orr’s in-house team of engineers, technicians and quality control experts work with customers to establish a coating system to meet their requirements for salt spray test hours. Orr rigorously tests parts to ensure quality standards are met. H.E. Orr e-coats and/or powder coats more than six million parts annually for two major foreign and domestic automakers as well as many other original equipment manufacturers.
